What can I say, HTTM is lewd and crude and does have its share of gross-out humor, but I enjoyed the cast chemistry, and the plot moved along at a brisk pace, and I think it's one of the first films where I wasn't bothered by Rob Corddry's appearance in it, as his character provided a lot of humor, as did Craig Robinson's character, while John Cusack's character was more of the straight man, and Clark Duke's character provided the voice of reason while being the youngest of the bunch. I even enjoyed the quick reference to "Better off Dead" (though I was the only one who laughed at it in my showing). Even Crispin Glover's appearance didn't bother me, but rather provided a nice running joke throughout the film's running time, as he tends to stop a film in its tracks for being a weirdo in films these days. I also liked that the film didn't take itself too seriously with the plot device of going back to 1986 and trying skirt around the Butterfly Effect. The audience was howling at some of the material, so much so that I missed some of the followup jokes, so a second viewing may be in order.
Is it a great comedy, no, but it's entertaining, with minimal dead spots, and if you can handle some R-rated comedy, you'll be laughing along with the material.
I give it 2.75 stars, or a grade of B-.
