While the dialogue was funny, classic Kevin Smith fare, the main misstep is that the script doesn't do a good job developing Zack and Miri to truly explore the romantic minefield that awaits them once they come up with the idea to make a porno after financial troubles become substantial enough to affect their everyday lives (cutting off electricity and water are the initial responses by the unpaid utility companies). The last act is the weak spot of the film, but overall, it's good enough to pass the time with some laughs (if you've seen Kevin Smith's other films, you pretty much know what to expect) from the situations at hand. There is one truly big laugh that had me slapping my knee, and you'll know it when you see it.
The cast is uniformily game for anything that Kevin Smith can throw in their direction. Rogen and Banks are solid in terms of their comedic delivery, and the emotional undercurrents in the script (but I still blame Smith for the clumsy final act). Jason Mewes looks weird without his long mane of blonde hair, but he more than makes up for it with a gratuitous amount of unclothedness.
I give it 2.5 stars, or a grade of C+.
