Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium

Tonally speaking, the film has a light, whimsical, deft touch by the director, and Dustin Hoffman's Mr. Magorium brings us an old, lovable but insecure character, whose spirit is imbued with child-like enthusiasm and wonderment, uses it to run his emporium that is filled with fun for children, even if magic appears to be at work to bring smiles and joy to all who enter the emporium. Natalie Portman is Mahoney, and she helps Mr. Magorium run the emporium, while struggling to find her potential as a piano prodigy. There is also Zach, a shy boy who likes hats and finds solace and a place of belonging in the Wonder Emporium; and Henry (Jason Bateman) who is an accountant brought in to help Magorium access his business affairs through the years.

The film does an adequate job of developing a sense of self-discovery amongst its characters at this crucial time for future of the Wonder Emporium. It's a little saccharine and melancholy in spots, but its heart is in the right place.

I give it 2.5 stars, or a grade of C+.
