This update was the idea of "Fame" meets "High School Musical" with the unfortunate side-effect of a scatter-shot amount of cliched subplots and uninvolving aftermaths of naive teenage life choices (I thought teens were smarter these days, anyway).
That being said, I did like some of the actual talent on display (music, singing, dancing, acting, etc.), but it just stops and sputters and plods through 4 years of the High School for Performance Arts for such a class of students with promising talent and ambition. An underwritten script without strong connective tissue and uninspired direction and vision sinks the film into a pool of mediocrity.
I give it 2 stars, or a grade of C on the strength of some of the musical, and song and dance numbers.
