Dinner with Schmucks

Granted, you hear "Dinner with Schmucks" and you wonder how such a concept can be drawn out with a run time of 110 minutes, and then you see it, and it's mainly because they spend a lot of time dealing with why Tim (Paul Rudd) has to find a schmuck to invite to dinner, but not only does Tim find a schmuck, Barry (Steve Carell) who has a thing for stuffing dead mice and putting them into dioramas, but Barry innocently insinuates himself into Tim's life, causing a lot of misunderstandings and farcical situations that take the film in many different directions, making it a rather uneven film.

But is it funny?  In many spots, it is funny, and the dinner party in the 3rd act is quite funny, in spite of the truly juvenile scenes shown in its trailer.  A lot of the humor comes from Barry's lack of boundaries, his sense of wanting to fix problems he causes, or social awkwardness in interacting with people, but underneath it all, there is some humanity trying to find the light of day as well.

I give it 2.5 stars, or a grade of C+.
